4.1 Design Consideration
A polymeric composite material is made up of at least two materials : a fiber and a matrix.
These are combined to exploit the individual characteristics, thereby providing additional
qualities that they are unable to provide individually.
They are markedly from metals in the following ways :
1. Composites are mostly orthotropic and inhomogeneous.
2. Generally, stiffness is less than that of steels, leading to greater attention to local and
overall structural stability.
