Critical Thinking

Operations Management. Williams J. Stevenson.

Nature is always our best mentor.

The photo illustration was chosen because the stream symbolizes the flow of work through the
system. An important goal for operations systems is to achieve a smooth flow of work through the system. And just as rocks in the stream on the photo disrupt the smooth flow of water and causes turbulence, inefficiencies, variability, and uncertainties in operations systems cause problems that disrupt the smooth flow of work through the system, increasing time and cost, and decreasing  productivity and customer service. The flow concept applies not only organizations, but also to their supply chains.

Issue :
  • Does the stream symbolize the flow of work through the system ??
Conclusions :
  • An important goal  for operations systems is to achieve a smooth flow of work through the system like the stream.
Reasons :
  • And just as rocks in the stream on the photo disrupt the smooth flow of water and causesturbulence, inefficiencies, variability, and uncertainties in operations systems cause problems that disrupt the smooth flow of work through the system, increasing time and cost, and decreasing productivity and customer service.

We can conceive some creative thought through observing natural phenomenon, from the first
photo to the following photos. By connecting them together and properly modifying some details
would make us perceive a new concept. For example, you can put almost everything on the
assembly line you want, it can be the radio, display, computer, iPhone, iPad, ... the size which can be large (aircraft), medium (automobile), small (consumer electronics)...

" Analogy "   of arguments.
Stream : Rocks = Assembly Line : Glitch. Is it logical ??

Assembly line needed the " Interchangeable Parts "  invented by Eli Whitney. Without
interchangeable parts (suppliers), we can not build the assembly line because every component is not identical and compatible. This is different from the stream the author fails to consider the supply chain as well as we need to a set of standard.

Rival Causes

How did Isaac Newton come up with " Gravity "  by observing the falling apple to the earth ??

This question which never be taught in my school education, teachers always tell me just to
remember  " F = ma ".  Basically, in my opinion, those teachers, who taught me,  were nothing
more than the workers in the assembly line. They are like the workers doing the same things again and again never giving the room for students to think.

After leaving the school education that means my thought can be unleashed from the morbid
examinations (student performance should not be measured only by scores) and giving me the
room to think about the truth. But what is the truth ??????

For most of us, we are familiar with every invention and beneficiaries of them, but how those
inventions were born that would be recondite. We are familiar with Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein... but, how they achieved prestige, the story is nothing more than the falling apple. In fact, there is the pedestal of all inventions created by human, it is the critical, critical thinking of the creator.

The scientists need the creative thinking, and the public still need the creative wisdom for solving the problems in our daily life. For students, they need critical thinking, because they maybe the inventors in the future. For employees, they need critical thinking, because they must improve the efficiencies of the work. Even the old, they still need critical thinking, because they may perceive the new concept.

Middle : Nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65)
Top and Bottom : Amphibious ssault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) and USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) transit alongside each other in the Persian Gulf.
What is the difference and purpose between " Aircraft Carrier "  and
" Amphibious Assault Ship "  ??

Amphibious Assault Ship. Landing craft air cushion maneuvering into the bay of the ship.

Both DSLR and Digital Camera are the camera. Both of them need the lens and CCD.
Both M-16 and AK-47 are the are the assault rifle.
Both Aircraft Carrier and Amphibious Assault Ship are the ship carrying the aircraft.

How to compare advantage to disadvantage on each term. In our daily events, we often face the
similar problem and there are so many contradictions in the messages we send.

Critical Thinking to Rescue :

Listening and reading critically, that is, reacting with systematic evaluation to what you have heard and read-requires a set of skills and attitude. A system of questions is more consistent with the spirit of curiosity, wonder, and intellectual adventure essential to critical thinking; they move us forward toward to a continual, ongoing search for better questions, decisions, or judgments.

A: awareness of a set interrelated critical questions
B: ability to ask and answer critical question at appropriate times
C: desire to actively use the critical question

Benefit:
  1. react critically to an essay or to evidence presented in the textbook, a periodical, on the website.
  2. judge the quality of a lecture or speech
  3. form an argument
  4. write an essay based on a reading assignment; or participate in class.
