The Primer. The firing pin hit the primer which ignited the black smokeless powder, and
pushed the projectile out of the end of the barrel.
The Casing and the Projectile.
Inside the casing filled with the black smokeless powder.

14 Century, Round Lead Ball.

Cast the projectile.

After putting the projectile down the bottom of the barrel, the primer needed to be added.

When the trigger is pulled, the flint in the hammer strikes the metal surface, sending the
spark into the priming paint.

The spark ignites the powder in the chamber which fired the round.

It wasn't without the problem, loading the round is labor intensive and time consuming, and
the ball itself is accurate.
Minie Ball. As you can see the base is hollow.
During the firing, the hollow base would expand to scratch the groove of the barrel making
the bullet spin which increased the accuracy in flight.

The watermelon is totally blown up.

1800. Paper Cartridge. It is the granddaddy of the modern ammo.
The paper is not loaded into the gun, it is more like the self-contained package, just the
right amount of the powder. Already to use. Let's make one.

The white section is coated with the wax.
The minie ball has the was to seal the round preventing moisture from contacting the powder.

Smokeless Powder.
The smokeless powder is higher muzzle velocity and less flame. It seems to be perfect,
but not everything. You see the muzzle velocity is so high, the traditional lead bullet literally
starts to melt in the barrel, so we need the full metal jacket. In 1906, .30 - 06 Ball FMJ Full
