The Gatling Machine Gun is extremely versatile that can be used whether on the aviation or ships. Without Richard Jordan Gatling, we may not to see this mechanism.This Gatling Gun once was claimed to be dead (too heavy to maneuver), and then the advent of the aviation, this Gatling Machine Gun resurrected and became the modern versatile weapon. Fantastic !!
Now, let me see what the history happened and how the Gatling Machine Gun was invented.
Civil War
Gatling invented the Gatling gun after he noticed that a major of the soldiers fighting in the Civil War were lost to disease rather than gunshots.
The following is the paragraph of the Gatling:
It may be interesting to you to know how I came to invent the gun which bears my names. I will tell
you. In 1861, during the Civil War, I witnessed almost daily the departure of the troops to the front
and return of the wounded, sick, and dead. The most of the latter lost their lives, not in battle,
but by sickness and exposure incident to the service. It occurred to me if I can invent a machine,
a gun, which could by its rapidity of fire, enable one man to do as much battle duty as a hundred,
that it would, to a great extent,supersede the necessity of large armies, and consequently, exposure to battle and disease be greatly diminished. I thought over the subject and finally this idea took practical form in the invention of Gatling Gun.

The mechanism is very similar with Gatling Machine Gun.
The barrel passing the magazine on the top of the gun. Each barrel would load the bullet at 12 o'clock position. As the barrel moves at 1 o'clock position, the spring loaded the pin firing the bullets.
Then, the barrel moved to the bottom of the gun, and the cartridge fell to the ground.
The result is one barrel is firing, the other barrels are reloading simultaneously that allowed it for
screaming fire.
At the heat of the battle, the human operator turned out it too hot. The Gatling Machine Gun
was cranked quickly would jam that wasn't good for anyone. The Gatling Gun is unreliable for
battlefield use.
