Tata Nano

Before this episode introduce the Tata Motors, we should understand the culture of India.
The road is probably the freest in the world, so Tata is interesting in safety of the road.
Cows sit beside the road.
There is a camel pulling the wagon in the raining weather.
People ride on the elephant on the road.
The horse pulls the carriage. After having the idea of India, Tata owns British luxury brands
Jaguar and Land Rover. Why is the British automakers sick ?? You know, BMW owns
Rolls Royce, and Volkswagen owns Bentley. It is abnormal to Great Britain.

Powertrain Shop, Press Shop, Weld Shop, Paint Shop, Trim Chassis Finish Shop.

Stamping Process.

Load the sheet metal.

Piston at TDC (Top Dead Center)

We can see the two pistons move down and up simultaneously, the counterweight of the
crankshaft used to balance the force of the two pistons. In this photo, the two pistons were
at BDC (Bottom Dead Center), so the counterweight counteracted the piston force.

But the weight of the crankshaft didn't just move up and down, it also crated the horizontal
force to shock the engine, to counteract the force, the engineer designed the single
balance shaft to balance the horizontal vibration.
Balance Shaft.
As we can see the mass of the balance shaft is less than the crankshaft, due to the
connecting rod also created the horizontal force, so the balance shaft canceled most of the
horizontal shock.
Take a look at this photo, this engine didn't use two balance shafts, it would produce vibration
at BDC, the balance shaft created the up-force.

Body In White.
Phosphate Coating. This process can prevent the rust from dispersing due to scratch or
the rock hit the bare metal.

The worker painted the interior of the car body.
The robot coated the exterior of the car. Color Coat

Clear Coat. Lacquer.

The robotic arm glues the resin on the windshield.
Fanuc Robot.

Install the fuel tank.

Install the front suspension on the chassis.

In this crush test, we can see the brown car without the collapsible steering rod.
We can see the A column of the brown car had been distorted during the crush, it demonstred
the crumple zone of the brown can is poorly designed, the energy can not be absorbed
without damaging the passenger compartment.

In this photo, without the collapsible steering rod in the crush test, the handle will slam the
driver's head, it is dangerous.

The engine and chassis engaged. The engine just below the rear passenger seat.
The worker connected the hydraulic pipe to the engine.
Rear-Mounted engine.
The noise test chamber, because the engine of Tata is easy to make noise at high temperature,
so they install the cushion to block the noise.

Just only three nuts to fasten the wheel.

Road test.
Fording water test for the monsoon season of India weather.
