Queen Mary 2


She is gorgeous and pretty svelte. Across Atlantic ocean which once provide thriving commercial passengers business. The only way to travel across Atlantic was on board ocean liners, until the emergence of passengers commercial airliners across Atlantic.


This is "National Geographic Megastructure" that is truly Mega. Continue to hone my ability of English. She is capable to cross some of the roughest sea on the planet, where passengers enjoy unrivaled luxuries. She is one of a kind of ship among ships. Everything about her is strength, speed.

Let us see how to design and build Queen Mary 2.

The odyssey just begins on National Geographic !!



I almost feel that "Queen Mary 2" resembles "Titanic" in painting and the outline.

Compare this picture to the above one, I got goose-bumps and chilly.

She is remarkable. The design of ship is limited by some environmental factors.

Queen Elizabeth 2  solved the problem using aluminium for upper decks which is lighter than steel. But this is no longer option. Because aluminium suffered seriously fatigued. Now, QE2 needed to frequently repair.

One of the fundamental challenges is generate its power. The speed of the ship is fundamental.

Wartsila four gargantuan diesel engines located at deep in the bow of the ship. The size means
they can not be fitted in a complete ship, instead the ship must be built around them.













The turbine engine which generated much power on demand.

The gas turbine produced a lot of power, but the biggest problem is it needed massive air.
Drawing this air all the way down to the turbine engine rooms through large ducts would take up
valuable space. The turbine is extremely light designed for the fly, so can be put on the top of the ship.

They divided the ship into several blocks which built separately, and then pre-assembly blocks fit together.

One by one, piece by piece, like the jigsaw puzzle. Pinpoint accurately.



The critical part of  the ship is emerging. The Bow.

It must withstand one of the furious forces of nature.The Atlantic ocean.

The bow would divert wave.

It seems to be perfect on the paper design, but it still needed to pass the crucial test which handle the rough sea without compromising the speed of the ship.

But this shape had never been used before, so no one knows what the result was.

Next test, the model must be at top speed.

This ship is difficult to achieve to the constant speed in six days across Atlantic ocean.
So the shipyard needed to increase the speed of the ship to fulfill the contract. The simple solution is increase its power, but the propulsion system is already on construction, so it can not be changed.

What a cute dolphin. The best shape of hydrodynamic in the world. In the air, I have seen the wing of Bald Eagle which inspired engineers to design the Winglet.  If I get more leisure time, I should enjoy the beautiful and power of Nature. 

As the ship moving forward, water forced into the bow wave at the front which caused resistance.

Many of ships, including Queen Mary 2 incorporated the Bulbous Bow. The bulbous bow can counteract the wave.

Two stabilizing fins on each side.

In calm weather, the fins can be retracted into the ship to reduce the drag.





The rear pairs would be able to rotate 360 degrees pushed the ship in any direction. So there is no need for the rudder.
