Keck Observatory-Engineering Connections

The incredible idea and invention hidden deep inside with its design.

This place means the air is thin that is why the Keck Observatory was there. The thin air and isolated position reduced atmosphere distortion making it perfect for the astronomy.

The Keck Telescope magnified the image.

At the heart of the telescope is the magnifier. The device for focusing the light.

The device can operate at precise motion.

Instead of creating a single huge mirror, they used 36 exact segments.

But making the big mirror in the little room creating the big problem. You need to arrange each segment, so it aligns up each neighborhood making the smooth and continuous surface. If it doesn't the mirror would not be the perfect curve to focus the light accuracy.

The sensors are used to figure where the signal located and adjust the entire arrays to the wonderful shape we need.

Used the sand blaster to polish the workpiece.

After hundred years the invention of the sand blaster, the optical technicians can  fire individual atom. Without it, the Keck can not have the sharp mirrors to focus the light.

Laser Manipulation. It can cut stuff atom by atom.

Cut the word on the human-hair. Here, it coming down vertical on the surface. If we want to polish something very smooth, very low angle to the surface to polish it.
